- Used by registered nurse Rene M. Caisse, patients began to ask her about the tincture, which was a Canadian Ojibwa Indian herbal tea. The drink was eventually named Essiac, which is Caisse’s last name spelled backwards. She ran her own clinic from 1934 until 1942, and continued to offer patients Essiac until the late 1970s.
